That being said, it can be managed and altered. So, the fear of change is both an outcome of nature and nurture. Moreso, humans are conditioned and naturally programmed to like to be in control. Instead, it becomes easier to stick with what is known. In that way, you have become programmed to be jaded and cynical as well. Their experiences may have created a worldview that promotes thinking that all paths are dangerous and filled with bad outcomes. This is especially common if your parents have dealt with trauma, abuse or poverty. The fear of change can stem from childhood experiences, familial views, personal outlooks, current conditions, and even just the way people are programmed.įor example, if someone grows up in a household that takes a negative worldview and is filled with cynicism, this could breed fear and anxiety over trying something new. If we don’t know how something will turn out, we may rather not try because the outcome could be bad. The fear of failure also comes into play to create a fear of change. Humans find it hard to move on when something known comes to an end. When we don’t know what will happen, we make up scenarios and, in turn, create worry. Our brains are designed to find peace in knowing. We fear change because it means that outcomes are unknown. But, when you’re stuck in a situation and have metathesiophobia, you cannot see so clearly. There are many different life experiences where people suffer from a fear of change rather than choosing to make the change, even when making the change is the better decision.įor example, a person may choose to stay in a toxic relationship because they are scared of the alternative of being single or having to go on dates to find a new partner.Īnother example is when people stay put in jobs that make them miserable or leave them feeling unsatisfied because they are scared to start a new job.Īs you can see, the optimal solution would be to move on and try something new. Those who have metathesiophobia may experience: Labeled metathesiophobia, this level of fearing change causes persistent unrealistic and intense anxiety when facing new situations or experiences. Photo by Tim Gouw on Unsplash What is Fear of Change? We will look at what it means to fear change, common symptoms of metathesiophobia, how to live with the fear of change, and methods to overcome such feelings. That something more is called metathesiophobia, and it’s such an intense fear of change that it can be paralyzing and very hard to live with. While it’s natural to feel that change is scary, some people may be dealing with something more serious. That’s why so many people would rather avoid change because of how uncomfortable the associated feelings can be. In fact, neuroscience has shown that uncertainty feels similar to failure in our brains. You’re not alone in these feelings surrounding change. Everyone experiences their own level of fear of change. 3 Among these symptoms are delusions of control, AVHs, and thought insertion. Self-monitoring accounts are often viewed as unifying accounts of the positive symptoms of schizophrenia. We will use the term ‘inner speech’ in the latter sense, although nothing of substance hangs on this terminological decision, and we acknowledge that both are valid senses of the term ‘inner speech’. In the latter sense, that subtype is, or is partly constituted by, an instance of inner speech. In the former sense, the subtype of AVH that interests us is not an instance of inner speech, even though it may be generated by the processes that usually generate inner speech. By that term one can be referring either to a particular experience, with a particular phenomenology, or to a particular feature of human cognition, which makes use of particular mechanisms, say, and which sometimes gives rise to that phenomenology, but which needn't always (for example, when it is disrupted in certain ways). Given this, it makes sense to start, for the sake of inquiry, with the hypothesis that at least some AVHs are instances of pathological inner speech, and then to ask: what kind of thing must inner speech be in order for it to play this role in the generation of AVHs?īefore moving on, it is important for us to get clear on what kind of thing we are referring to by ‘inner speech’. However, it seems to us that, despite its prevalence and familiarity, the nature of inner speech is far from self-evident. Theorists tend to use inner speech (which they take to be relatively un-mysterious) to make sense of AVHs (which they take to be relatively mysterious) and not vice versa. It is worth mentioning that the order of explanatory primacy is normally the reverse of what we are doing here. Our focus in this paper is on inner speech-based AVHs, and what they tell us about inner speech more generally. In contrast, hypervigilance hallucinations involve the moulding and boosting of ambiguous environmental stimuli into voices (as such, they are strictly speaking not so much hallucinations as illusions). As the names suggest, the ‘raw materials’ for memory and inner speech-based hallucinations are episodic memories and episodes of inner speech respectively. Three identified subtypes are memory-based, inner speech-based and hypervigilance hallucinations. This has lead some theorists ( Jones, 2010 Wilkinson, 2014 Smailes et al., 2015) to claim that there are subtypes of AVHs, and that these amount to fundamentally different phenomena, underpinned by different mechanisms and different aetiologies. As a phenomenon, it varies enormously in a number of ways: in how it presents itself phenomenologically, in terms of the context in which it occurs, and arguably in what causes it. In this paper, we suggest an account of a specific instance of this, namely, a particular subtype of auditory verbal hallucination (AVH), and draw some lessons about the processes that underlie normal inner speech.Īn AVH involves, roughly, the experience of hearing a voice in the absence of anyone actually speaking. 1 But what is inner speech, and what happens in unconscious processing that makes it the conscious experience that it is? A clue to answering this can be found in cases where the mechanisms that produce inner speaking behave unusually. Inner speech is a pervasive feature of our conscious lives. “There is something wrong with these cars,” Ms. She took a loss on the car, just to get rid of it. In addition to the buybacks under lemon laws, details of the problems with the Cobalts were cited in complaints filed with federal safety regulators - more than 4,500 about Cobalts from January 2005 to March 2014, according to a review of the database by The Times. Already, 10,000 loaners have been provided. has made loaner cars available to customers who are uncomfortable driving their cars while they wait for them to be recalled and fixed. The automaker has recalled nearly 2.6 million of the cars, including over a million Cobalts, in the last two months. The Cobalt is among the six models of small cars that General Motors has recently recalled for the faulty ignition switch that is prone to turn off if it is bumped, shutting down the engine and disabling air bags. The Heasters complained to dealerships and then to G.M. “It would just die in the middle of the road,” Ms. They had bought a red 2005 Cobalt for their 16-year-old daughter, Heather, but within weeks, it was repeatedly losing power and the family thought it was dangerous for her to drive. At least four of the repurchased cars in Florida were resold to new owners, The Times found, including one that was identified as potentially having an ignition switch problem. Complaints from buyers included such bizarre occurrences as the engine running after the key had been removed. The Times review of the lemon law databases shows the Cobalt had problems well beyond the ignition switch. “It’s a vehicle with a poor track record, with deep concerns about its safety and performance,” said Rick Soletski, executive director of the International Association of Lemon Law Administrators, a group of American and Canadian officials that acts as an advocate for lemon programs. filing with federal regulators, that the automaker’s brand quality division urged its engineers to reopen an investigation into the car’s faulty ignition switch, which was one source of buyback complaints. was so alarmed by the early number of buybacks, according to a G.M. General Motors declined to disclose how many Cobalts had been bought back under lemon laws, saying, “It is very difficult to answer questions about claims that may be more than a decade old.” That makes it impossible to calculate a precise nationwide total because reporting and disclosure rules differ from state to state, and federal regulators do not compile such data.īut in Florida, a state that collects data on repurchased lemons and some other buybacks, the Cobalt was the most-repurchased car in its class manufactured in 2005, its first model year. So how do constructors decide what’s in and what’s out? Patrick Berry, a constructor whose puzzles have appeared in The New York Times and The New Yorker, said that he strives to keep his puzzles “apolitical,” which is difficult. “There was a lot of anger over that.”Įven Sharp, who is one of Shortz’s biggest critics, said that “Shortz changed the New York Times, radically in terms of how fun it was…turning away from being a test about arcane knowledge and toward a kind of playful, wordplay-oriented kind of puzzle.”Īlthough crossword constructors and solvers are overwhelmingly left-wing-Shortz surveyed attendees of his American Crossword Puzzle Tournament in March 2017 and found that close to 90 percent voted for Clinton-there is no consensus among editors, podcasters, and solvers on what should be included in a puzzle. But it’s also, as I did not know at the time, an offensive term for Hispanics,” he said. “It’s baseball slang for a ball that hits the batter’s head. A few years ago, Shortz included the word “beaner” in a puzzle. Shortz brought pop culture into crosswords, Taussig said. When Shortz became editor of The Times crossword in 1993, things began to change. “You’re making an assertion about what counts as ‘common knowledge.’”įor decades the people making decisions about what should be in a puzzle have been straight white men according to Taussig, who said crosswords were a “very much elite, hyper educated, white, New York City thing, where if you didn’t know chess and your classics you were screwed.” “Whether you want it or not, there’s a kind of inherent politics ,” said Michael Sharp, a SUNY-Binghamton English professor who, under the pseudonym Rex Parker, pens a blog critiquing The Times crossword and has constructed puzzles for them. On March 21, 1943, the New York Times crossword clue was “author of a bestseller.” The answer: six letters long “HITLER.” Hitler still appears in the Times crosswords, but his last name hasn’t been an answer since 1984 (clued as “history’s blackest.”) The types of clues and answers in crosswords have shifted dramatically. Questions arise: should dictators appear in crosswords? Serial killers? What about Donald Trump? Or Hitler? Are terms like “hag” okay? Puzzle debates represent a microcosm of larger cultural conflicts surrounding race, class, and gender. So you also have this responsibility to at least be aware of what it is that you’re feeding those people.” “Hundreds of thousands of people are consuming this thing on a daily basis and paying for it. “During the pandemic, the same type of reckoning that we’ve had in the rest of American society…where we’re looking at representation, we’re looking at inclusion,” said Rebecca Neipris co-host of the Crossnerds podcast. At a time when debates about language anchor political discourse and incorrect pronouns spark vicious attacks, the fact that culture wars are being played out in crossword puzzles makes sense. Sex is just one of the many contentious issues surrounding crossword puzzles. The AV Club crossword, however, has published “pegging.” While an article on pegging might run in the actual newspaper, Taussig said, in the crossword, things are kept more PG. References to “pegging,” will never show up in The Times, according to Benjamin Taussig editor of the indie American Values Club crossword (which formerly ran in The Onion), and author of The Curious History of the Crossword. “But I assure you this viewpoint is expressed with a pure heart.”Ī response from Will Shortz about the entry 2D in today's crossword puzzle. “I want your focus to be on the puzzle rather than being distracted by side issues,” Shortz said. The original clue to 2-Down in Tuesday’s puzzle, which was written by Gary Cee, was “Pitch to the head, informally.” And Shortz defended the use of the word by explaining that in past puzzles, a “benign” meaning of the word was fair game. “It is simply not acceptable in The New York Times Crossword and we apologize for including it.” “Tuesday’s Crossword puzzle included an entry that was offensive and hurtful,” a spokesperson for the New York Times told TheWrap. Like the Crash Zone, lots of Sand Sharks and Stalkers live in this biome, however also like the Crash Zone, it is dominated by lots of Reaper Leviathans that constantly fight over territory. The Dunes biome is more or less what it sounds like, it’s a nice looking biome full of sand dunes that goes to deep depths, having most of it’s seabed land at 300m deep. What makes the Crash Zone especially dangerous is the dirty and misty fog of the water, likely caused by the crash of the aurora as it’s impact shook sand from the ocean seabed everywhere despite the fact that this isn’t a problem at all for Reapers because even though they are blind as bats, they still use echo-location with their roars. The crash zone’s fauna consists of merely Sand Sharks and Stalkers, but mostly Reapers that prowl the area for smaller lifeforms to snack on. The Crash Zone was originally likely an empty, more dead-looking counterpart of the Grassy Plateau biome, but became even more dead when the aurora ship crashed into it as the crash likely killed a a lot of lifeforms in the area on impact. Habitual preferences will usually stand at large open areas in the ocean, typically in specific biomes such as: Motivational note: Congratulations on getting close enough to scan it and living to see the results!Īssessment: Extreme threat – Avoid in all circumstances Observed circling its prey and attacking from behind. The deep roar emitted by the reaper at regular intervals is effectively sonar – if you can hear it, the reaper can see you. Simulated pressure exceeds Seamoth crush resistance. This leviathan is capable of locking prey in place with four powerful mandibles and drawing it within reach of its jaws. This species is a streamlined hunter, with highly developed senses. Leviathan class species are vast organisms at the top of their respective food chains. It’s appearance consists of a long white and red-coloured snake-like body with 4 large, red mandibles on it’s face and a large, red and flat horn on the top of it’s head, which it would’ve used to fight when in conflict with other creatures, or it’s prey. According to the wiki (unofficial), all that’s required for a creature to be placed in the category is for it to be really big.The Reaper Leviathan Overview The Reaper LeviathanĪ carnivorous, aggressive leviathan-class life form of fauna that inhabits multiple diverse regions on planet 4546b. I just wanted to explain something I thought of and found interesting from me looking up what the hell Leviathan actually means. They are Leviathans because the devs say so and it’s their game. Note: Just to clarify: This is my opinion, I don’t think they fit the bill for what I think a Leviathan should be. So, because it’s size doesn’t compare to other Leviathans, and because it’s a snack for another Leviathan, in my opinion, the Reapers aren’t actually Leviathans. There are 2 more in the ALZ if I remember correctly but still, this means that it’s not very uncommon for the Dragon to get himself a meal from the surface. The Reaper is sometimes dinner for the twice as large Sea Dragon which sometimes takes a trip up the LR, and drags a Reaper down to the ILZ.Īnd remember, there is 1 Sea Dragon in the ILZ. In the Inactive Lava Zone you find I think there are 4 Repear Leviathan skeletons. BUT IT ISN’T EVEN AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN And the Sea Emperor is dwarfed by the Gargantuan Skeleton found in the LR which is around 1000m.Īnyways, compared to it’s diet of small fish, stalkers and bone/sandsharks it’s pretty massive. It’s half the size of an adult Ghost Leviathan, and the Sea Emperor is beetween 3 or 4 times bigger. OK, so is the Reaper huge? Yeah, but, relative to others? No. Now, the term leviathan could be interpreted in many ways, combining a few definitions, this is what I found best describe them: Huge ocean monster that is the top of its food chain. I actually owned the European version in around 2000, and took it with me during my military services. Whilst the FIVA was mostly available in Japan, some units actually made it to Europe and other markets. It’s fairly OK for doing some on-the-go work, as long one does not expect a power house. So, is the FIVA 102 thus a bad device? Not all. The choice for this CPU was most surely for both cost and power consumption reasons, similar why both Sony and Toshiba eventually chose to use the Transmeta Crusoe in their lineups. While truely x86, it’s not the fastest CPU, and only roughly comparable to the contemporary Intel Pentium MMX at same clock rate. The device sports a National Semiconductor Geode GXm, which actually is a rebranded Cyrix MediaGXm CPU, clocking in at 233 MHz. Although a decent amount of accessories, such as port replicators, extended capacity batteries, and external floppy and CD-ROM drivers, were available, it sports an usual CPU choice, making it not exactly a power house. Wether coincidence or intention, the FIVA MPC-102 was propably no match to the Libretto or the contemporary PictureBook in direct comparison. The second thing to notice when opening up the FIA 102 is the color scheme, which resembles a bit the one used by Sony for their VAIO lineup. The first thing to notice when holding the FIVA 102 in your hand is the similarity in dimensions to the Toshiba Libretto. |
